Garden Information and History

The area where the OCSD Glendale Garden is located has a long history of cultivation. Originally owned by William Penn University, the garden was cultivated by WPU staff and their families for around 30 years. When the Oskaloosa Community School District (OCSD) took ownership of the garden, it had not been in operation for a few years. In November of 2014, the Community Garden Committee invited the previous administrator of the garden, Ron VanHeuvelen to facilitate the Glendale Garden. In previous years, the garden housed about 6 plots, and in 2015, an additional 10 plots were added to Glendale Garden. Though this particular Community Garden has no access to a water source, VanHeuvelen says the crops thrive. The Glendale Garden is open to community members, but preference is given to families of the OCSD.
